By buying these pixels people are able to advertise their own site by placing a link on someone elses site. When pixels are bought from the right site, they can e incredibly profitable, by havng pixels on the right site you can boost your websites hits by 100%, sites such as this and others i have spoken about help you to decide which pixel site to use.
Placing an advert on a pixel site which has high traffic and returns good results in search engines will in turn give better traffic results for your own site along with helping push you own site up the rankings as links to sites is one of the variables which search engines use to evaluate its ranking when returning search results

I have had a look at the most used pixel sites, but i am slightly bemused by the seemingly small size of the pixels. Could u shed any light on this? What is the cheapest price that i can purchase a pixel for?

Each pixel costs a certain amount, however each pixel is incredibly small. Therefore pixel sites sell these pixels in bunches whereby you buy say 100 pixels at $1 each. This means you would pay just $100 for a 10x10 block. There are some sites which may sell pixels for less than $1 each.
